Musea Brugge
It is an original colouring and activity book for the littlest ones. Everything has been inspired on the broadly varied collections of the Municipal Museums. In order to stimulate the creativity of your toddler, we have made sure that it is not only about paint and coloured pencils. The book also contains several cutting activities and puzzles. You can even make a real mask! From now on, there is nothing to stop our little visitors from becoming real artists themselves. The nurses of Saint John’s Hospital, the municipal archaeologist, great masters such as Bosch and Brusselmans and, of course, Aristide the Museum of Folklore’s cat are waiting impatiently to be given a colourful look.
For sale in the various museum shops for € 3. more info (PDF: 470 kB)

The character “Pentje Seel” (“Paintie Brush”) lives in the museum and wants to show the children her home. Together with her, they pay a visit to 6 different paintings. After visiting each painting, the children earn a piece to a puzzle. The teacher receives a hand puppet and a basket with wheels, in which 6 different bags sit. The other nursery school game is “Captured Colours”. The gnome has locked up 6 colours in his hole. Can the children help save the finger puppets? In the cloak room, you receive a set of keys with fragments of paintings and a box with six drawers, each containing a finger puppet. Is it the first time you’ll be taking your class to the museum? Do you want to prepare your visit well?
‘Can opener’ is a new method of introducing children aged 6 to 12 interactively to the visual arts.
‘Can opener’ already starts in your classroom. By playing a board game with fun tasks and questions, you will be teaching the children some techniques that will be useful in the museum. Then you take your class to the museum. Thanks to the great games you pull out of the Can, pupils will look at the works of art in a more purposeful way. Taking a close look and learning to understand art is the point of it all. So this is nothing like a traditional visit! Guaranteed to be a hit...
The Bruges museums can lend you two ‘Can openers’. Make your reservation early!
Free (providing you leave a deposit). Please, let us know afterwards how your class liked it.
With the co-operation of Canon Cultuurcel

Bruggemuseum - Archaeology
What’s stewing in the cooking pots of a Merovingian mother? Does she store the leftovers in Tupperware? The Bruggemuseum (Bruges Museum) – Archaeology brings prehistory, Roman times, the early, high and late Middle Ages and more modern times face to face with the present. Under the motto “Feel the past under your feet” you receive the unique opportunity, via the various “do” and “search” features, to discover all the elements of daily life in the city of Bruges. You’re invited to visit a mix of archaeological finds, replicas and reconstructions, all in an educational, but playful manner. An activity cell punctuates each time period. In these cells, you, yourself, search for answers to archaeological riddles. The children receive a list of questions and if they find enough answers, they earn the coveted diploma of an ‘archaeologist’ from the academy of ‘Pol de Mol’ (Paul the Mole).
Pictures of the opening weekend

In October 2006, there were elections for city and provincial councils. We were able to vote for a new mayor and city council. An important political moment. The Bruges Museum now offers you an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into this theme in class. There is also a ready-to-go lesson packet especially designed for the 6th year of primary- and the first year of secondary schools in Bruges: it consists of two prepared lessons and a supplementary visit to the City Hall of Bruges. The students are plunged into the election battle, choose their own city council and vote during their visit on a motion in the Gothic Chamber, just like the real city council members. The lesson packet is free to all teachers > katelijne.vertongen@brugge.be. [This offer remains valid even after the elections].

If you’d like to study cultural heritage in the classroom, you can inquire about the free guide, ”Over en voor erfgoedschatten!" ("About and for Cultural Heritage!”. Through this guide, the non-profit organization Volkskunde Vlaanderen (Folklore Flanders) seeks to offer teachers guidelines for introducing students of the 5th and 6th years of primary school to cultural heritage in a pleasant, yet educational and inspiring manner.
